Sporting clubs play a vital role in role modelling positive behaviours and creating a healthy community environment.

Join the Good Sports Team to find out more about how to manage alcohol and illegal drugs as well as promoting safe transport to and from club events.

The session will cover:

• Role-modelling healthy behaviours for younger members
• Preventing and reducing alcohol-related harms
• Encouraging a healthy, smoke-free environment
• Supporting mental health initiatives and reducing stigma
• Making sure everyone gets home safely (and much more)

In addition, Jessie Burke - Community Development Officer (Recreation and Health), City of Kwinana - will be giving a Kwinana sporting community update.

Active Kids grants are intended to assist clubs and organisations to support and encourage young Australians, aged 20 or under, to improve their physical and mental health by increasing their participation in sport. In some cases, clubs can apply for up-to $10,000 for new equipment and uniforms. Visit the link for more.

Finally! The construction of the City's newest facility, Ngook Boorn Mia-Mia/Honeywood Pavilion and Oval, is almost complete. The building is expected to be open in October 2022. From now until Friday 16th September 2022, your club or community group can apply to be a seasonal tenant of the new facility by completing the Registration of Interest process.

The pavilion/mia-mia is being built on the south-west corner of Honeywood Oval, adjacent to Honeywood Primary School. The oval is shared with Honeywood Primary School who have exclusive access during normal school hours (8am to 4pm). The reserve, cricket nets and adjacent playground facility are well used by the community outside of these hours not only because of its quality green space but because it is an important open space for health, connection and social wellbeing. The oval is a hub for activity each week, and is home to regular community events such as the the Local Honeywood Farmers Market.

The City encourages all applicants to consider the mixed used of the site and to look for opportunities for partnerships or concurrent use.

The City has recently been successful in gaining support for a number of club development initiatives. One initiative is a Community Webinars series, which is a great way for your club or community group to upskill on a range of topics. All content will be delivered LIVE on the dates and times indicated with recordings shared for ongoing learnings. The are no limit on the number of registrations. We encourage each club to log in and watch these live.

Are you looking to strengthen your membership numbers and increase volunteerism? Learn how your club or group can utilise the theories of social inclusion to build a strong, connected clubs and groups..

3rd August, 6.30pm - Asset Based Community Development

Learn how to identify people within your community, club or group as an asset for their skills and talents with the use of some practical tools and resources.

7th September, 6.30pm - Inclusive Events

Learn the value of creating socially inclusive events in your communities that give people the opportunity to share experiences with one another, while learning more about the community around them.

Applications for the $1.65 million Sport and Recreation COVID-19 Cleaning Subsidy, supported by Lotterywest, are now open.

Subsidies are available to help community sport and active recreation clubs with COVID-related cleaning and personal hygiene costs:

• $2000 for clubs who own, operate, or lease a facility (such as clubrooms) and are responsible for the facility's cleaning costs.
  
• $500 for clubs who do not own, operate, or lease a facility.

We encourage you to register to attend this event.

It has come to the City's attention that there is a lack of smoking signage across some City facilities used for sport. Therefore the Healthy Lifestyles Team, are currently undertaking an Audit at all venues to determine whether new signage needs to be installed. Whilst this is rolling out over the next month, we have designated portable metal A-frame signs for each club to use as they see fit. The signage could be put between dug outs or interchange benches, or places that don't necessarily have hard infrastructure to bolt a sign too. The A-frame sign will be lent to your club for the season and it will be your responsibility to store when not in use. Please contact Jessie.Burke@kwinana.wa.gov.au to organize the pick up of your sign from the City's admin building.
