Looping Back

Thanks for contributing to the Bertram Place Plan engagement – we really appreciate it! We have had such a great response with over 250 surveys completed. Many of these were on line but the majority were done face to face. We’re taking this opportunity to loop back and let you know what we’ve been up to, what came out of the community engagement and to touch base and get your feedback before we move onto the next stage of the place plan process. To this end, we have made a copy of the Draft Bertram Place Plan, available online for your consideration. It’s worth noting that The Plan has not yet been endorsed by the City, as we are eager to hear the thoughts and feedback of community members such as yourself first.

What are we doing?

We’re working with the Bertram community to help create and support great public places. The Bertram Place Plan outlines a proposal of how we can work together to achieve the collective aspirations of the community and the City. This proposal is supported by an action plan to guide the next 18 months and assist us in working together to develop a shared future vision for Bertram and longer-term improvements.

What have we done?

The plan is a summary of the knowledge we have gathered about Bertram over the past 18 months. During this time, we worked to get to know Bertram, its people and stories via a series of community engagement activities including:

  • Place Postcards were hand delivered by the Place Team to over 500 houses within a 500m (approx.) radius of the Bertram Community Centre and e-distribution through the Bertram Primary School and Bertram Chat
  • Place survey – both online and face to face with a total of 250 responses
  • Numerous one-on-one interviews with local businesses in the Bertram Shopping Centre. While this stage of data collection was impacted by COVID-19 restrictions, we have continued to develop our relationship with local businesses and support them via initiatives such as the City’s Stay Loyal Shop Local campaign and the Local Commercial Support Grants;
  • Place Audits with Local Community Groups (prior to social distancing restrictions prevented further such gatherings);
  • In-place engagement activities including:
  • Mad Hatters Tea Party – over 300 people
  • Bertram Show - Face Painting stall with over 80 little faces painted
  • Three movie nights - 400+ people attended with over 300 ice creams eaten
  • Coffee Van Morning at Bertram Primary School – 67 coffees drunk and over 200 of the fabulous school community met

We’d love to hear what you think!

Unfortunately, A Taste of Bertram which was to be our Key Visioning Event was cancelled due to COVID-19. For this reason, the Place Plan (link above) does not contain a shared vision as originally intended. Instead, it includes a set of four guiding principles and an Action Plan derived from the information collected via the above engagement activities.

We would love to hear your feedback, particularly regarding these guiding principles and the Action Plan:

  1. What do you think about the Action Plan and the range and type of actions included?
  2. Do the guiding principles reflect what you want from your community?
  3. What have we missed?
  4. Do you have any other feedback?

Be sure to let us know if you would like to be more involved in the future or if you would be interested in being part of making any of these changes happen.

Where to from here?

We will be taking the Bertram Place Plan to the Council meeting on 28 October 2020. To this end, we would appreciate any comments by 3 September 2020 to enable us to collate the feedback received and incorporate it into The Plan. Once formally endorsed by the City we will continue to work with the Bertram community to collectively deliver the actions. The Place Audits will continue throughout the life of the Place Plan and will be used to measure and track the progress of the area over time.

If you’d like to chat further or are eager to be involved, please contact me, your local Place Leader. We can meet at the Bertram Community Centre or Sara’s Patisserie for a catch up, between 9.00am - 5.00pm, alternatively, flick me an email or give me a buzz to arrange a time that suits you.
