Who can apply?

Anyone who is aged 16 or over and who either lives, works or studies in the City of Kwinana. We welcome applications from people of all cultural backgrounds, life experiences and abilities.

How will members of the group be selected?

Following the application closing date, EOIs will be reviewed by two staff members from the City's Community Development team. Applications will be managed securely to ensure privacy of applicants personal information.

Applicants will be assessed in terms of their suitability for the Reference Group, and this will be determined on the basis of how well they meet the following criteria:

    • Have a direct and meaningful connection to the City of Kwinana. This will include people who either live, work or study locally.
    • Be willing to make a contribution to the work of the group by sharing their ideas and their life experiences, and by providing feedback to City staff.
    • Be able to demonstrate a genuine interest in ensuring Kwinana continues to develop as an inclusive, welcoming and connected community.

When selecting members, the City will seek to ensure that the group is comprised of a diverse mix of people from different neighbourhoods, age groups, cultural backgrounds, and life experiences. These factors will be taken into account when determining the groups' membership.

How many members will there be?

The Reference Group will comprise 10 to 15 individuals.

    Will there be an interview?

There is no plan to conduct interviews as part of the selection process, however City staff may reach out by email or phone to clarify information provided on the application form.

    When will meetings start?

Meetings will commence in early May and will continue monthly until the Multicultural Action Plan is developed and endorsed by Council. This is expected to be completed by November 2026.

The City will seek to schedule meetings on dates, times and venues that are suitable for members. Meetings are likely to be held outside of business hours to enable participation by people who work full time.

    What is expected of members?

    Members will be asked to:

    • commit to attending monthly meetings, which will be scheduled for no more than 2 hours.
    • contribute to discussions by sharing their ideas and their feedback.
    • share examples of their own life experiences as they relate to themes such as cultural diversity, migration, social inclusion or exclusion, belonging and connection and racism or discrimination.
    • show respect for other members by active listening, valuing diverse perspectives and maintaining courtesy.

Is there any time commitment outside of meetings?

Very occasionally, members will be asked to review and provide feedback on documents outside of the meeting.

What will happen to the group when the Multicultural Action Plan is developed?

The Reference Group will be in place for the duration of the project to develop the Multicultural Action Plan, meeting monthly until work on the plan is completed, around November 2026.

Once the plan is developed and adopted by Council, the Reference Group will be discontinued.
