FAQs
What is the Kwinana Loop Trail upgrade and why is it happening?
The Upgrade is a phased project to improve the existing 21km Kwinana Loop Trail so it will become a higher-standard shared path for walking and mountain biking, with a more consistent, hardened surface where possible. It aims to support community health, provide a safer and enjoyable recreational experience, and help grow local tourism.
When will I start to see works on the ground?
Kwinana Loop Trail Upgrade works will be rolled out in phases over a few years, with the first phase commencing in the first half of 2026. This phase will concentrate on safe connections and ease of navigation along Runnymede Gate, Wellard Road in Wellard and Gentle Road. The next phases will concentrate on improved surface in Leda Nature Reserve, in the Unallocated Crown Land between Gilmore Avenue and Thomas Road, and signage improvements.
How will construction impact my current use of the trail?
Works will be phased so that only certain sections are affected at any one time, and temporary detours or short-term closures may be in place. The City will provide advanced notice of impacts, including online updates on the City's web page, clear on-site signage so regular users can plan their visit.
What changes can I expect to see on the trail?
You can expect to see improvements to the surface of the trail, continuity and safety of the trail, and improved wayfinding and interpretative signage. The improvements will enable the trail to reach a Class 2 and Easy/Green mountain bike standard.
How has the community been involved?
The City has undertaken community consultation during the development of the Kwinana Loop Trail Master Plan and the Trails Network Master Plan and will continue to seek feedback from key stakeholders at the design phases of the project.
How will the project respect environment and cultural heritage?
The trail runs through sensitive bushland and areas with important Aboriginal and European heritage, so these are key considerations as part of the design and upgrade process, and will undertake appropriate approvals prior to commencement of each phase. The upgrade will also incorporate both interpretative signage and storytelling at key sites to reflect the importance certain areas.
How will the upgrade benefit the Kwinana community?
The upgrade will provide more accessible and attractive spaces for walking, riding and spending time in nature, supporting physical and mental wellbeing. It is also expected to bring economic benefits by attracting visitors, supporting local businesses, and creating jobs linked to tourism and trail-related services.
