Coastal Hazard Risk Management & Adaptation Plan (CHRMAP)
Our beaches and coastline are special places that mean a lot to our community. But they’re also sensitive to natural changes like erosion and flooding, which are expected to become more serious as our climate changes and sea levels rise.
The City of Kwinana is updating its Coastal Hazard Risk Management and Adaptation Plan (CHRMAP), a strategic planning document required under State policy and the Planning and Development Act 2005. The updated CHRMAP will build on the previous Coastal Adaptation Plan and provide guidance on key timeframes and triggers to help reduce coastal risks in the both the short and long term.
As part of this process, the City is seeking to better understand how the community uses and values the coastline to support informed decision making.
What are CHRMAPs?
A Coastal Hazard Risk Management and Adaption Plan (CHRMAP) outlines how to effectively manage and adapt areas and assets at risk from coastal hazards such as erosion and flooding. These assets include both built and natural assets, which provide social, environmental, infrastructure and economic benefits to the community.
CHRMAPs inform other local planning documents by providing a framework for managing future coastal vulnerabilities. They allow for informed decision making to occur for land use planning in the short and long term.
CHRMAPs are shaped with input from local community members and stakeholders, encouraging collaboration and listening towards local values and concerns. Working together in this way helps create practical solutions that are not only more resilient to coastal challenges, but also better accepted by the community and are more cost-effective.
