The City of Kwinana is looking closely at how we contribute to a more sustainable future. To achieve this, we are developing a Sustainability Strategy.

The City of Kwinana Sustainability Strategy – what is it?

The City’s new Sustainability Strategy will set out a vision to help build sustainability objectives into our strategic approach, in line with the City of Kwinana Strategic Community Plan. This Strategy will create a roadmap to guide the organisation and community towards a more sustainable future.

The Strategy will align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, while also being informed by you, our community. Your thoughts are important to us, and we are looking to understand:

  • what is important to you?
  • are there things we can do now to help create a sustainable future?
  • are there areas where we could be doing more?
  • what are your priorities for building a more sustainable community?

The ‘Sustainability Strategy’ has become a ‘Sustainability Framework’ as it represents the approach that the City will take to align with sustainable outcomes. To be truly sustainable, we must addresses all four components of sustainability: social, economic, environmental and governance.

From our community engagement, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals that were considered priorities by our Kwinana community were the following:

These goals were used to identify some Priority Areas that will direct the City’s efforts, and to develop a set of Guiding Principles that the City will use to check that its decisions and planning align with sustainable outcomes.

The Priority Areas are:

  1. Climate action
  2. Environment and biodiversity
  3. Liveability
  4. Engagement and inclusion
  5. Waste and resource recovery
  6. Responsible investment and procurement
  7. Innovation

The Guiding Principles are:

1

Social inclusion

2

Community wellbeing

3

Thriving local economy

4

Environmental stewardship

5

Decarbonisation

6

Resilient and adaptable communities

7

Generational value creation

8

Integrated and transparent decision-making

The City will be applying the above Priority Area recommendations and Guiding Principles across its operations and strategic approach and will report against these annually.
